MEPS Data Users' Workshop

Description

The MEPS Data Users' workshops provide extended knowledge about MEPS data, practical information about usage of MEPS public use data files and an opportunity to construct analytic files with the assistance of AHRQ staff. The workshops are designed for health services researchers who have a background or interest in using national health surveys. AHRQ offers these workshops free of charge.

Agenda: March 28th from 11 am -3 pm and March 29th from 11 am -1 pm Lectures consisting of several MEPS topics, including overview, conditions, prescribed medicines, insurance, data collection, sample, weights, and how to perform analysis using MEPS.

She is the leader and coordinator for AHRQ data (MEPS and HCUP) workshops and webinars. She has worked with MEPS for 17 years. In addition to managing the MEPS workshops during these years, she has also supervised all aspects of the preparation of data files related to Health Status (including all self-administered surveys) and preparation of Medical Conditions data. She is also the Project Officer for MEPS-Insurance Component Survey. Additionally, she provides technical assistance regarding MEPS data and writes descriptive analyses of MEPS data. Sadeq Chowdhury, PhD, AHRQ (Senior Mathematical Statistician @AHRQ) Sadeq Chowdhury is a Senior Mathematical Statistician. He provides statistical technical supports to MEPS such as sample design and selection, nonresponse adjustment and weighting, variance estimation, and data analysis; also conducts related research. He has 25+ years of experience in design, estimation, and analysis of sample surveys. His previous work includes working as a statistician at NORC at the University of Chicago; Westat Inc.; U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Rebecca Ahrnsbrak, MPS, AHRQ (Survey Statistician @AHRQ) Rebecca Ahrnsbrak is a Survey Statistician. She works on MEPS data processing related to prescribed medicines, medical conditions, and health measures. She has worked at AHRQ for nearly three years and has previously worked on several different surveys at SAMHSA, NOAA, and the Census Bureau. Asako Moriya, PhD, AHRQ (Economist @AHRQ) Asako Moriya is an Economist. She contributes to the design and development of primary data collection efforts and research-related databases of MEPS, especially in health Insurance. She also uses the MEPS data for her health services and economic research on healthcare reform, opioid use, and provider behavior. Jerrod Anderson, PhD (Mathematical Statistician @AHRQ) Jerrod Anderson is a Mathematical Statistician. He works to improve data collection and imputation related to utilization and expenditure. Has 6 years of experience working on MEPS. Prior to joining AHRQ, he received his PhD in economics from University of California, Irvine. William Carroll, MA (Survey Statistician @AHRQ) William Carroll is a Survey Statistician. She works on data editing for the income and employment variables and produces statistical reports using the MEPS data. He has extensive experience in CAPI development, data editing and reviewing projects for submission to OMB. His previous work includes working as a survey statistician at the Census Bureau. Marc Zodet, MS (Senior Health Statistician @AHRQ) Marc Zodet is a Senior Health Statistician. He provides statistical, analytical, technical, and computational support/consultation to CFACT and other AHRQ staff as well as external users MEPS. In addition to working on the MEPS project for many years, he has extensive experience using large administrative claims databases, clinical trial data, and registry data. Previous projects have included collaborative work to assess the MEPS prescription drug editing process and efforts to use the CMS Medicaid Analytic Abstract (MAX) files, as well as other data, to validate the utilization, expenditure, and health insurance data collected in the MEPS. Marc works with R, Stata, SAS, and SUDAAN. Emily Mitchell, PhD (Survey Statistician @AHRQ) Emily Mitchell is a Survey Statistician. She works on MEPS data dissemination and improvement related to condition coding, imputation procedures, and data visualization. She manages AHRQ’s Data Tools website and actively maintains AHRQ’s GitHub pages. Prior to joining AHRQ, she received her Biostatistics degree from Emory University and completed a 2-year post-doctoral fellowship at the NIH. She is an avid R programmer who occasionally dabbles in SAS and Python.
