Concurrent Session 1: Collaboration Compass: Engaging Parents on a Path to PROGRESS
Family participation is an essential feature of the development and implementation of high-quality educational programming for students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) mandates that families, and students when appropriate, participate in the development, monitoring, and the implementation of individualized education programs (IEP). However, this process can be challenging for parents and caregivers to navigate. In this session, we will share findings from a series of focus groups with families and caregivers, resources from the PROGRESS Center, and partners that schools can use to help families feel knowledgeable and confident in supporting the development and implementation of their child’s IEP; how Rhode Island is working with their local educators to improve family engagement will be highlighted.

This concurrent session is part of the Prepping for PROGRESS! Adding New Tools to Your Backpack (Toolbox) for the Start of School Virtual event from the PROGRESS Center. Please note, that you will need to register individually for the sessions that you are interested in participating in during the event. This registration will only cover the Collaboration Compass: Engaging Parents on a Path to PROGRESS concurrent session 1. This is the first of two repeated concurrent sessions. To attend other sessions within the event, you will need to register for those sessions.
